I have picked up the book with the feeling that it will be different. I've looked at the flying and urban front of Jaione Dagdrommer. The sky occupies the majority and many birds appear. Free flight. Free. The image on the front page contrasts with what we read from the initial pages, as the protagonist is in the hospital: closed, on site, without contact with the outside almost and in shock.
We will find two worlds, two spaces and, therefore, two times: what happens in the inner world of the protagonist, on the one hand, what we read in the form of an internal monologue: hallucinations, dreams, imagination, conversations with oneself. And the suffocating feeling that time is slow. On the other hand, it shows us the outside world, which are more descriptive episodes and in which other hospital patients, doctors, nurses, tell us dynamics and standards. Questionnaires, medications... always from the perspective of the protagonist, but at a more intense pace.
But I can't talk about style if it's not styles: some chapters are those marked by time, written with capital letters, showing the plight and despair of the situation. Others are in the form of dialogue, showing that the interrogations suffered by the protagonist are violent. The book is full of rhetorical questions that do not answer the situation and the life of the protagonist. All these styles create a point of discomfort, probably a reflection of the situation experienced by the protagonist himself. The writer has managed to get him feeling.
Another thing to highlight in the style is that there are many cultural references. They form a universe, and I think they appear like a play. Enter, sometimes as if an absurd situation were staged and left the scene. Writers, historians, journalists, filmmakers, actors, politicians, singers, songs, poets, protagonists of books, musicians, painters, travelers, books, dancers, films. Examples: Penelope, Ulises, Marilyn, Roch Liechtenstein, the Marx brothers, Thierry Malandain, Nelly Bly, Alexandre Dumas, The Swell Season, Anna Karenina, Mikel Laboa, Jara, Star Wars, Olivepte How,
I have written the criticism listening to the group The Swell Season mentioned in the book, because Goizalde Landabaso has opened the door to a new cultural universe. Thank you very much.
