What is having one more at home?
Before, they won the Etxepare Prize when it rains and by the Hiltzaileak albums we knew the founder Leire Salaberria (in addition to other works as an illustrator) and this is his third work, if we are not mistaken,. We are one more, previously published in Spanish in the editorial Beascoa (La familia panda. We are one more) and now Salaberria offers us this interesting work in Basque.
From the beginning it can be seen that this book is a mixture between the album and the comic book. In addition to the play between text and image, the author uses comic books balloons to express the dialogues of the protagonists and, in this sense, brings greater vitality to the story.
The father, mother and daughter are the protagonists of the story, the daughter is the narrator to be closer to the hypothetical reader, and at the beginning it is explained why the cheerful atmosphere of the house: His father tells his daughter, “We will be one more in the family, Yun.” She then asks “What is being one more?” and history tells us trying to answer that question.
Salaberria takes bears as protagonists and, according to the initial image, places history in Japan. These distant places do not decrease the tenderness or distance to the story. And the author offers us an interesting and recommendable story about the arrival of a new child.
It is clear that Leire Salaberria has evolved from his first simple and clear images, and this time he incorporates much more information into the illustrations. Character characteristics, spaces, environments -- they all show us information to better understand Yun's story and his sister, to enjoy more with the story.
Although color cakes stand out, accurate and elaborate strokes help a lot to collect the information from the illustration.
We are one more, a nice, sweet book, about the increase of the family and the acceptance of the other, with all the problems it raises at the beginning but with the subsequent complicity, a recommendable story that speaks of all that, in short.
