Energy dependence in confusing times
Energy anywhere. Electricity, gas, gas oil, all expensive, raising citizens' and business bills to the point where energy becomes a luxury product. Becoming demons, Europeans focus on the dependence we have on it, asking sacrifices to get rid of the bear's fingers. But, as with all the complex problems, the issue is deeper. As the external dependence of Hego Euskal Herria is enormous (85%) and our fossil energy base (80%), it is clear that energy sovereignty based on renewables must be taken seriously. Many reasons, the first one, climate, because 90 percent of the greenhouse gases we emit into the atmosphere are burned by fossils. The second is the finite character of fossils. The treasure is not forever and better to overcome fossil fuels before they leave us. Third, bill. With this year’s prices we will need EUR 10 billion to pay for external energy, damaging the micro and macro economy.

In the head of everything, besides boosting energy savings, we have to jump to renewables. Although the amount of energy that fossil resources offer us is irreplaceable, we must take rapid steps. It is true that renewable energy plants use limited, often isolated, material resources. The challenge is to decide how much, who, where and how to develop it. As far as possible, there is an urgent need to promote a model of small-scale projects dispersed in the ownership of the citizenry, but with limitations. In this way we can satisfy domestic and commercial consumption, but the mobility of transport and industry requires a new scale. The problem is that renewables have a conflicting relationship with the territory.

Hence the importance of linking the deployment of renewables with rigorous territorial planning, environmental care and food sovereignty. Moreover, if obtaining the energy of the future will have, and will have, a good measure of social profitability is vital and is based on public planning and momentum, active participation of citizens (both in planning and ownership) and the exclusion of speculators from the equation.
