We live in a climate crisis in which we are all aware. So much so that public institutions, which have looked for many years on the other side of scientific evidence, are working to carry out what has been called an energy transition.

In Catalonia, however, we are seeing that the solutions that the Generalitat is putting forward for the decarbonisation of the economy can aggravate the problems that already exist: the loss of ecosystems and biodiversity.

Different platforms and collectives, ecologists, agricultural, university and even business, have denounced: The renewable energy expansion model of the Government of Catalonia is seriously threatened. It threatens the big cities, and not the municipalities in which they are carried out, especially the people of Lleida and the interior of Tarragona, for the sustainable development of the areas of the country that have already been heavily punished by infrastructure.

With the approval of Decree Law 16/2019, of November 26, on urgent measures for the climate emergency and the promotion of renewable energies, there is a boom in the processing of projects of wind and photovoltaic power plants that threaten natural spaces of historical and cultural relevance.

Disadvantaged organisations have criticised the fact that projects are being processed without taking into account the processes of dialogue and participation with the territory, or applying criteria of territorial balance, rationality and energy efficiency. Of course, all this is not casual, because the Generalitat is making it easier for those who determine the rules of the game to be the promoters.

The organizations that have shown their opposition do not deny in any case the need to generalize the production of renewable energies, and one of their proposals is to implement in rooftops the 29,372 hectares that make up the industrial sites of Catalonia, of which 13,201 are in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. They require that central productions be built in these polygons, in industrial and urban roofs, in degraded peri-urban areas and, above all, in areas close to consumer centres.

They also require the radical transformation of the current model in order to move towards a model that enhances the deceleration of energy consumption, self-consumption and the proliferation of local energy communities. But despite the existence of alternative proposals and solutions, the traditional law imposes the economic interests of the powerful, who are provided with access to cheap land in the affected areas, reducing costs and increasing profits.

Among these companies is Forestalia, led by the Aragonese pig magnate Fernando Samper Rivas. Or also Green Capital Power, a merchant company of Jesús Martín Bueces, former daughter-in-law of Florentino Pérez. These two companies contemplate the construction of three lines of Very High Voltage (MAT) in Catalonia and another in the region of Valencia dels ports. All this in order to evacuate the wind and photovoltaic energy produced in the projects planned in Aragon and Catalonia, and to channel it to the major cities of the Mediterranean arc (Barcelona, Castellón, Tarragona, Valencia), to connect it to the European high-voltage network through various substations.

In short, once again, we are faced with the same ones that have been enriched by continuing to destroy and have led to collapse, in this case with the label “green energy”. And always with the consent of the political power, which today has proclaimed independence and independence from the left.
