Safo is said to be the first poet woman in the West. The translator Maite López tells us: almost all the women who wrote poetry after her came to her as a refuge, as an authority and as a stimulus to create it. Also seduces men, Ezra Pound: “If you want to know the essence, Safo, Catulo, Villon.” The scriptures of about two thousand seven hundred years ago continue to shock the present one.
We only know the twentieth part of the entire work, almost two hundred legible parts. If life is like that too, imagine, with Bernat Etxepare: “Safo’s work has become the most direct source of knowledge of the author’s life.” But the work and life, life and work, both are of interest, regardless of the time in which they were read, and according to the time: tradition criticizes Safo for the tendency to fall in love with women, “and for the unnice aspect that gave him the low height, even for the darkness of the skin for the taste of that time.” And we would add, as a woman, for daring to work in an area of men. Because a woman is the main subject of the poem, a woman who claims the right to talk about her sexuality. Mary Beard would say that what is at stake is not so much the subject of speech, for example lesbianism, but the voice is the voice of women.
“On Safo’s homosexuality,” for his part, Maite López “has written terribly reflecting the mentality of the moment”; and what is to be signed is as follows: “It must be remembered that your words cannot be measured with our eyes at all.” That is, according to them, we have to read the poems, without reading them according to our interests; however, given that the readers are children of the time. Or emphasizing the positive: that each era creates new ways of understanding and enjoyment of Safo’s poetry, as well as of anyone else.
