Architect's penis
- The architecture school of San Sebastian has been news for a regrettable event. A teacher is an actor and protagonist of a shameful performance when he takes the penis out in front of his students.
Since I am not aware of the details in which the action took place, I am not in a position to analyse the fact in depth. But I am convinced that an incomprehensible, regrettable and denounceable fact from all points of view tells us a context and reveals a specific character of the masculinity of the architect. Although the diversification of the architect's profile is a reality, the shadow of the architectural masculinity delimited in the past remains active. The profession of architecture has changed radically in recent decades; the labor landscape has little to do with the construction of the omniscient and powerful figure of the architect: less is being built, in poor working conditions, in very fast construction times, the knowledge of construction is increasingly complex at administrative, legal, management level... And it is still considered that the role of the architect is strange, not a compulsory work, which can be saved. But although all of this speaks of the present of the architecture profession, the generations of architects today, including me, are students of ancient architects, children. It will take longer for the “death of the father” to occur.
I would dare to say that the architect's penis is related to male vanity. The architect, because he feels part of the high culture, stands above the normal situations, offering himself the medal of the sibarite class and the elegant taste. With the acquisition of this place of security, the seat of exalted inequality risks distorting reality, and most seriously, abuse and harassment of others can be considered natural. And it's male, because the creator of the historical architectural figure described is a male architect. If we add to this disorder the culture of masculinity that we live in, take the beads out.
