You're old, Bilbao
- The SBAU 2021, International Biennial of Urbanism and Architecture, is currently in Seoul. The city of Bilbao is there, presenting projects with other cities, but occupying more stands than the others (!). The City of Bilbao has exposed its design projects in the colonization of Seoul: Expansion of the Museum of Fine Arts of Foster, Kunsthal-Design, Auzo Factory Matiko, As Fabrik, Bilbao CT Lab, Azkuna Zentroa. It is unconscious and of little importance from the architectural point of view, that which has met in the Biennale has little of a future, the old one dressed again. Construction has been carried out from the idea that urban infrastructure will become key, as if buildings had a future magic potion. Although architecture can have transformative capacity, it has to be done on a plan, as a result of social and political penetration, because otherwise it risks being an empty space.
The City Council of Bilbao must be recognized as a great skill in the marketing campaigns of the city, because it has managed to bring the “transformation of Bilbao” to many shores of the world. Let us not forget that the beginning of the global phenomenon of the marketing of cities took place in Bilbao, with the Guggenheim effect. But has the chicken not given all its eggs anymore? The midwife we know, more than boredom and shame, causes anguish. So what you say in other forums, we're on a next screen. Cities are going to be asked to restructure the shortage of resources that is coming, social segregation, the management of climate refugees or the health of cities, and we are already late.
In Gurea, the 3rd edition of the International Biennial of Architecture of the Basque Country “Mugak” is underway. Let's see if it offers any hopeful component.
