Many of us have had some miscarriage, some intentional, some involuntary. Mine was one of the last, when the pregnancy lasted three months. The word was not mentioned in the consultation. Then I moved on to the third person, a sympathetic spectator of a representation that I didn't see. I truly understand that at first I needed it, for many it is terrible news and acted as if they had realized a death. The tone didn't diminish even if it came out of there. And I was very quiet. “It’s not serious, it’s less bad,” I thought. Two pills, pain, but limited and ready. One more step in the process of having a child. Not so much the others sent me messages of condolence, the people around me were attentive to my peace of mind being a phase of denial. My mother and sister spent the night and the day with me, and taking away the moment of pain (and it was short, I gave everything needed to make it so), they made it one of the happy moments of my life, because we had a good time together. That is, a free and safe abortion can be very quiet. Also when elected.

Recently, after talking about the topic, a friend gave me the Happy Abortions fanzine. The author, Elisabeth Falomir, proclaims that the abortions selected can be encouraging, without feelings of guilt, even celebrable. And the text made my body happy. It is true that there are many reasons why abortion is not fun, which makes abortion a dramatic succession of obstacles. Illegality in many places kills or leaves thousands of women with irreversible consequences. The last thing the headlines have told us about abortion has been that in Madrid, where abortion is legal, a woman has not been able to abort in a public hospital. They referred him to a clinic that practice him. And we've known the story because the woman hasn't given in until someone has heard her. And also, because that abortion was therapeutic. The life of the mother was at stake. “As my profession, some colleagues threw them out and operated on me that same afternoon. But women who don't work in health? Well, you're going home and you're going to wait two or three days, bleeding and narrow legs, not knowing if the fetus is still alive or dead," the protagonist explains. As is often the case in which one gets the headline, one’s story has revealed itself as that of thousands of other women. The eleventh that the holder has not obtained. It doesn't seem that those who start public abortion have to get to a place where they do it from the prologue of a party; if you're lucky, they'll insult you at the clinic, or more horrify you, they'll pray to you, they'll pray to you.
And in the midst of this, I think it is important for someone to remember that abortion can be, by itself, joyful: to do so, certain conditions (rights) must be guaranteed. Each testimony also teaches us how to fine-tune the conduct of abortion. I couldn't get the 2014 cover looking forward to reading Falomir's: “I have also aborted.” Maite Asensio Lozano published in the newspaper ten women (Maria Jesús Berroaran, Idoia Eizmendi, Mari Luz Esteban, Gema Lasarte, Monika Sojo Plazaola, Sorkun Rubio, Ana Etxarte, Alaitz Tresserras, Hegoa Ugalde and Ekiñe). It does not have to be encouraging, cheerful... but it must be based on the peculiarities of each woman, the difficulties she has had to face in order to abort, its consequences and the speeches that, although they start, always come to blame. That, at least, is ours.
