If I am not mistaken, the two books he has drawn this year are the first works by Enara Garmendia in the Basque letters. The poet has published two works: From house to America and we are Three, but to me five! Both are published through the house Erein and the two with protagonists of the same family. Yes, the first is for young people and the second is for children.
As the title from House to America indicates, this is the story of a family that is going to spend a year in the United States, specifically of its eldest daughter, Maia. After knowing the avatars of the trip, the reader will know the life “there” of Maia, his studies, his trip to school by bus, how they catch him there… and how he must endure the bullying of some of his students.
Garmendia tells the story from different points of view, with several narrators who will expose the facts from the perspective of each one of them. Maia and her friend Ayla are the main storytellers. These two girls are the most important narrators, but there are other voices that appear sporadically: that of their brother Gorka, that of Professor Ms. Rose, that of his boy Nathan, and that of his class Hannah. The argument of history will be built together. This network will be known mainly thanks to the story of Maia and Ayla, but the contributions of others are also enriching to know the full history and from different perspectives.
The reader will feel trapped with those who happen to Maia; he will soon see how he is rejected without guilt for him and how he is isolated by all his friends around him. But at the same time we will be witnessing the debate that exists within Ayla, why defend the person who is going to go to the end of the course, if this can cause him to stay alone? Why stand up to the “friends”, to the crew and defend a girl from outside?
The book, in short chapters, and jumping from one narrator to another, is quickly read and can be very appropriate to speak in this globalized world of many aspects: education, friendship, bullying, love… But above all, this first novel by Enara Garmendia is a book to have a good time.
