On the contrary, the most beloved passage of the old Pliny, which I have certainly not read the 37 volumes of Natural History, is not the twenty-fourth chapter of the seventh book mentioned in the last column, which refers precisely to the memory, but the fourteenth, in its entirety the fourteenth place, the vineyard, the viticulture, the bridge that emerges from the fermentation of the grapes: Wine Book. Written almost 2,000 years ago, one of the oldest and most important wine references, it embraces all the wisdom of the time.
It is true that there are passages in which the information is excessive, in the end so many references are drunk, for example, if you make a list of all kinds of grapes, but on the contrary you have sweet passages, all demonstrating the private and public life of the Roman world, often similar to ours. It refers to consumption habits, prohibitions, therapeutic uses and not only the soul. It was used as a medicine near death. It revitalized people. Always in moderation. In another case, “the next day the breath has the smell of bran and forgetfulness moves above all: the memory is dead.”
Oh, wine. The conquest of man – and women, of course –. I know that in what we have just entered in summer, we may find beer, or sangria, but don't forget that wine is varied, according to Pliny, to you, that, blood, black, can add honey. But if you know that you are entering the wisdom of the long centuries, which already appears in Odyssey, in the Bible, even Jesus impulses us: "Touch it all and drink from." Drinking wine is an act of civilization. It has played a central role in all the social stages and layers of humanity. And it goes where it goes, where barbarism was, it spreads culture. Always in moderation. Or not, sometimes.
