Avoid more deaths at Bidasoa
- On 16 May he focused on the sports club Azken Portu de Irun to recall that approximately a month ago the body of an Eritrean migrant was found near the Bidasoa. A weekend later, there was a demonstration between Irun and Hendaia in defence of human rights convened by organisations on both sides of the border. They denounce the death of another migrant in the Bidasoa and the need to rescue another minor who was expelled by the gendarmes.
The deaths in the Bidasoa are occurring as a result of migratory control policies, including racist policies, which lead them to flee war or hunger and to murder migrants seeking a better life for themselves and their families. It should not be forgotten that, on the pretext of the “anti-terrorist alert” and the “Covid-19 pandemic alert”, the French State is carrying out de facto racist controls on non-white people on the border, especially black and Arabic.
If the Mediterranean has become the largest migrant graveyard, let us try, even on another scale, to avoid another graveyard between us, in the Bidasoa. The administrations of Hego Euskal Herria, arguing that they do not have competence in this regard, cannot look elsewhere. They can and should take steps to welcome migrants in transit to alleviate the vulnerability of migrants. Furthermore, as solidarity citizen organisations demand, every effort must be made to demand, where necessary, that European migration policies be changed. Only in this way will we avoid more deaths in the Bidasoa.
