I have not been able to say the title well since I had the book. Because, besides being long, it supposes an idea of impact, or, anybody knows. Nor have I been able to write the name of the author correctly. I have constantly eaten or displaced the letters, although in 2018 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Before I start, I recognise that I really liked it: although entering the book was not sudden, it has taken me to the forest in a subtle way. Their descriptions are not long, but they are very visual and meaningful. He searches for meaning in small details and manages to describe moments full of sensations.
The author takes us from the protagonist's hand. He is a clear, active, evocative and powerful character. Engineer and professor of trade and astrologer of hobby. Through the horoscope, the deepest thoughts of the character are narrated. So we can see the psyche of someone who really wants to understand people, the world and life. He's a sensitive character who loves every living thing. A mature woman that our society considers crazy. Although he's the most empathetic, smart and healthy.
The book begins with the death of a hunter living in the area. You can also read with intrigue those that follow. Despite the winter, snow and loneliness, Janina's inner world is the one that has drawn me the most, the narrative voice is that of the protagonist and being in the first person gives closeness and strength to the book. The signs of darkness have diminished and immersed me in the magical world as a reader. It combines deep and complex reflections with the simplest things, getting brilliant phrases and ideas: “Because at dusk the most interesting things happen, because then the smallest differences are also eliminated. I could live in an eternal sunset.”
The translation is provided by Amaia Apalauza Ollo and Sonia Kolacz. As we can read in the thanksgiving section, it has been a translation full of complexity. Polish and English versions have been used and, furthermore, the technical words used to talk about specific topics are abundant. But they've managed to convey sensibility, and although I'm going to have works that remember the title, I'm going to keep a special sound in the brain. It is an elaborate, complex and excellent translation.
In Euskera we can read another book by the author: Lost soul. Conceived as an art book, it is beautiful, warm and powerful. To continue enjoying.
