In the Basque Country, youth employment has deteriorated significantly in recent years and, above all, in the last months of the pandemic. According to official Eurostat data, in the first six months of 2020 in the Spanish State, including Hego Euskal Herria, the youth unemployment rate has risen from 32% to 43.9% in August. In the French State, including Iparralde, it has risen from 18.6 per cent to 22 per cent. In addition to unemployment, young people suffer atypical contracts, wage dumping, precariousness, low wages and abuses resulting from job insecurity.
If we add to this the difficulties they have in accessing the housing, which the rent is rising more and more, up to 42%, the situation is harsh and terrible. For example, according to several studies carried out in the Spanish State, the emancipation of young people aged 16-29 has worsened between 2008 and 2019: the proportion of young people who can leave the parental home has increased from 33% to 24%.
In this context, it is urgent that governments and governments have young people among their priority objectives. The priority objective of these European funds, Next Generation EU, which have been announced for the revival of the economy. They have to be offered decent jobs and wages, and they have to be given more affordable housing that helps them afford to get old. Without youth, there is no possible economic, social and political recovery. It must be defended!
