The extraordinary music of Beethoven (on the 250th anniversary of the birth of the composer) and the freshness and vitality of the Young Orchestra of Euskal Herria (EGO) made this year’s winter meeting an inescapable date.
The truth is that this Beethoven anniversary was a little confused in 2020, due to the circumstances we all know. But this EGO session compensated us in some way. The program was very adequate, as there were unusual works. On the other hand, the young soprano Jone Martinez demonstrated her excellent skills for this repertoire, to which must be added the work of the actress Eneko Sagardoy as a narrator.
Her first job, Ah Perfido!, is a concert arias for soprano and orchestra written by Beethoven at age 26. For the singer is a piece full of difficulties that narrates the betrayal and abandonment of the lover of the protagonist of the film. Jone Martínez, in addition to showing her vocal skills and ease of going through different registries, was expressive and nuanced. The orchestra, for its part, was always exquisite and attentive to the soloist.
The epic moment is Egmont op. It came with 84 works. It is a set of ten pieces of incidental music composed to represent the tragedy of the same name written by Goethe, in which the life of the Flamenco hero Egmont is narrated, and in particular his struggle with the third Duke of Alba, until he was arrested, condemned to death and beheaded. The protagonist claims the ideal to fight for independence and against the oppression that the Spanish monarchy represented for his country.
Music is descriptive and passion for interpretation is fundamental to reach the public. Both the orchestra, full of nuances, such as Jone Martinez, as tried as in her first work, lived up to Beethoven’s work. The narrator Eneko Sagardoy showed the strength and genius needed to convey the emotions to the viewers.
This beautiful concert, as is normal these days, ended with a funny Christmas bis that captivated all the attendees. Congratulations, sincerely, to the members of the Ego and to the director Rubén Gimeno for their work.
