Disruption
Every year new words appear, sometimes related to new facts and other times invented by quick advisors, most of the veces.La main word of this year, or at least the one that has become very fashionable, is COVID-19 and
without questioning the first position of this word that has already become vulgar in the ranking, I want to bring to light another word, disruption.
I do not know if Euskaltzaindia has said anything about the truthfulness of that word, but as explained in numerous reports and texts, I have decided to use it as such. I've read somewhere that disruption means a sudden interruption with something. In this sense, we cannot deny that COVID-19 has been very disruptive, because it has made us suddenly change our customs, relationships, ways of working, and the rest.

Disruption has reached most of society, including technology. By the end of the current decade, disruptive technologies have become the front line, and traditional technologies, dominated for years in a very short time, have been marginalized. Neural networks, artificial intelligence, analysis of large data sets, artificial vision, virtual reality and augmented reality, etc. It's been the ones that have generated or are generating disruption in technology and in companies. Business visits, sales, product and systems maintenance, non-face-to-face meetings, language translations, production chains and everything we think about is changing.
Traditionally, technology was needed in linguistic engineering and in the so-called cultural industry, it was second-rate compared to what was needed in manufacturing and in my opinion it was rather exhausted, that is, although at the beginning of this century spectacular advances took place, in the mid-decade when we were showing clear symptoms of fatigue and impotence.
Disruptive technologies have been a turning point in the situation I've mentioned. In a very short period of time, good automatic translations have been achieved between the Basque language and other languages, the telephone conversations clearly show the way for the Basque language also to be present in simultaneous translations and automatic personal identification will be possible in the Basque photographic archives.
And the examples I've mentioned are the same as in the manufacturing industry, they're of the first order. Therefore, disruption has united us with the different industrial actors, and from now on we will have to use the same technologies to advance in all kinds of industries. Let us seize the opportunity!
