The Basque mafia
We have read it in Berria. Dave Bieter, acting mayor of Boise, has been linked to the "Basque Mafia" during his rival's election campaign for the mayor of the capital. The mayor of Basque origin, for his part, has branded these words as "inadmissible" and asked for forgiveness because they "insult" not only him, but the entire American community. When it comes to drafting these lines, we do not know what Bieter's request has answered, nor whether the mayor of Boise is still in his hands. Berria’s article, in any case, did not clarify exactly what they were called “Basque Mafia”.
The Basque Mafia is a concept that has appeared quite frequently in the Spanish press in our years of lead. ETA has been called this way, wanting to equate its methods – brain shooting, blackmail of revolutionary tax – with those of Cosa Nostra de Sicilia. As with the theory that “everything is ETA”, the appointment extended to the entire Abertzale left. In the end, it became “Basque mafia” for some columnists or tertullians. In the worst deliriums of some people, in addition to in Basque society, the tentacles of the institution were alleged to the classes and the decision-making centres of the State. Although, to a lesser extent, in Navarre, more than one right-wing right-wing party has thus baptized the country’s shy Basque lobby.
I started writing these lines with a gossip. In the first moment I wanted to write the title that the reader has in front of his eyes, I liked it on his own.
Was there anything like what Bieter's rivals in Boise were talking about? Who knows? Literature, cinema and television have long since acquired the existence of several “national” mafias in the United States. Italian, the most famous, but also Irish, Jewish and Chinese. Along the same path we know that Japanese or Russian criminal organizations have opened their delegations in the “people of freedoms”, not to mention the Latin posters of Colombia or Mexico. Naïve Basques had not created anything like that until now.
Has this changed now? Has the people of pastors and apostles been tired of being honored and honored? What if that were the case, would it be so bad? Imagine the number of new opportunities. How many businesses, clear and dark, would flourish on the pretext of strengthening ties with our overseas relatives. How many literatures, how many films, by scorsenses and rockets with Basque surnames. And a lobby, the real one, to defend our interests in the Capitol.
I've started writing these lines with an umbrella. The first time I tried to write the title that the reader has in front of my eyes, my thought slipped on my own. Unconscious or something like that. So it has been written to me “Euskal magic”. The correction has already been made, but it has given me a great deal to think about the proximity of the two words.
