Changing Grandpa
This work has been awarded the Etxepare Prize of this year organized by the Local Entities of Navarra, so it has the opinion of a jury. Since its creation more than a decade ago, the Etxepare Prize has served to promote Basque albums, increase the Basque offer and also to make new creators known.
That is what has happened to us this time. The young writer of Lasarte-Oria, who this year has written his first book for adults, has also created this first children's play, along with the comic illustrator and cartoonist Asier Iturralde Gaston. In fact, the influence of the comic book is evident in Gaston’s illustrations and also in the book’s cover. The images perfectly reflect what you want to communicate, which on many occasions does not correspond exactly to what the text says and that causes a smile in the reader.
The reader who approaches the book, as soon as it opens, finds a list of norms. Standards established unanimously in January 1972 by the three residents of this House – father and children. Of course, that had already happened, and the girl who tells us the story will use her skills to find loopholes in the harsh nature of her grandfather.
“I don’t understand how you manage so well!” says the mother and the uncle to the girl, but in that contrast between what you have to do and what you do, we can see how a new relationship is created between the children and the grandfather; in this case, the leap that occurs since the acute times when they were parents. And proof of that leap, of that leap, of that change are the physical relationships between grandfather and nephew, as well as the new list of norms that have emerged as a result of that separation, behavior and change in the relationships of space: New contributions about him today, written by a naughty, salsero and living girl who recounts history.
Few texts, very expressive images – which, as we have mentioned before, have the trace of comics – and a simple and attractive argument have made the authors smile and complicity the reader – at least my own –. It is a joy that the Etxepare Prize gives us the opportunity to boost the world of Basque albums and, above all, to publish this kind of attractive and humorous work.
