Rarely can we find an original contemporary dance show. It seems that because it is contemporary it has to be something new, but behind this label shows of this kind are often offered, in the style of Maurice Béjart or Russell Maliphant (often clumsy). That's why when we're dealing with something really cool and suggestive, we get a wow.
The latest work by Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter shocked us. In grand finale choreography, in the words of the author, the communion, beauty and reflection of a world in disagreement with itself are mixed. I do not agree very much with that description. We can feel discomfort, sadness, chaos, and some rays of light that can come out of that chaos at some moments, but no food, no ridicule, no trace.
The Grand Finale show, following Shechter's aesthetic coordinates, talks about the chaos of the world, the collapse of our civilization, the crumbling and perhaps reconstruction through impressive dance and music, also choreographer. Shechter has a very peculiar and characteristic style: distressing environment, intense light, strident sound, hysterical dance but measured milimetrically, perfect, these are its characteristics. At times it looks like a free dance, but right away all the dancers will melt to make a very complicated and tight choreography.
On the other hand, this project has interesting news. The dancers mix with the musicians – five musicians play live – interact with each other and, in addition, the show is enriched with the coral work of the group, through owners and threes.
If we add to all this the comic number that the musicians did during the rest, then it has to be said that it was a very nice session. Not only friendly, I would say excellent. Shechter's art is hypnotic, it hooks you from the beginning to the end, and once the dance is over, it lets you think. Rarely does this happen.
