We cannot deny that the show led by Barbora Horáková Joly was made with courage and enthusiasm at the Arriaga Theatre. I was in sight. Young artists, courage, imagination in the resources of the scene… Singers, dancers, musicians, each and every one of them offered the best of themselves in this hour-and-a-half-long show, which spread throughout the theater. The attendees were at ease in this respect. However, if we have to do an analysis of what we saw and heard, valuing quality, the result may not be so positive. I'm sorry.
Minimalism is OK, but in the name of minimalism The dance of fire, for example, if depicted through fans and confessions, it seems that it is an end-of-course action and not a “celebration of the human spirit” presented in the hand program.
The show was simple, rather poor. The choreographies of James Rosental, with the utmost respect, did not reach a minimum. The stunts that had been offered to them by hanging from the strings, for example, were very forced, hardly at all. And other dances didn't contribute too much to the show.
Soprano Ángeles Blancas had good moments, especially when singing the Seven Popular Songs of Manuel de Falla. Blancas was able to give each piece a proper nuance, such as tenderness in Estera or savage revenge in Polo. Soprano has some nice clothes, although the middle record is quite nasal.
On the other hand, the choice of texts was not very logical. The beauty of Stefan Klein's Universe and the texts of Oliver Sacks' Hallucinations are truly interesting, but I don't know if they had to do with Manuel de Falla's universe, despite making an effort to find a telluric connection.
The Bilbao Sinfonietta acted with delicacy and restraint. He always stressed the voice of White Angels, without covering anything. He lacked some brilliance at times, but Iker Sánchez Silva did a decent job, no doubt.
