These objectives were realized last Saturday at the Plaza de la Trinidad de Donostia-San Sebastián on the occasion of the commemoration of the centenary of ARGIA, and in view of the warm welcome of the attendees, it seems that a good start has been made on the withdrawal of colonization.

Coming down from Urgull, there is another smell of the day: there are many people gathered at the entrance of the Plaza de la Trinidad, waiting for the municipal txistularis of San Sebastian to begin their historical journey. To say goodbye to the old acquaintances and to share a single day, one can see the enthusiasm of the people who, despite 12 October, show that there is much to celebrate. Before the tour begins, Argia’s editor and historian, Urko Apaolaza, has welcomed and sent a clear message: “We have many areas to decolonize: our bodies, our language, and also our daily lives. Colonizing is much more than exploiting the earth: Every time we turn on Telecinco, we go into a little colon. To free ourselves from the chains of the metropolis, we demand information sovereignty.” The applause has begun in the centre and the txistularis have begun to play under the direction of Piter Ansorena, willing to cheerfully decolonize the corners of the Old Town.

If we want to decolonize it, we must begin by first acknowledging each other's own. Bertsolaris Miren Artetxe and BEÑAT Gaztelumendi have responded boldly to the explanations given by Urko Apaolaza at each stop. Many people have joined the historic route. The first stop was in the Plaza del Valle Lersundi, remembering the massacre of August 31, 1813. From there, to the church of Santa Maria, to emphasize that the building is the result of the forced labor of the slaves. The route has continued along Calle Mayor, and Apaolaza has led us to a time when it was forbidden to speak in Basque and not to speak in Basque. He has quoted such important figures as Txillardegi or Elvira Zipitria, for the importance they had in bringing the Basque people out of the depths and darkness of the well.

Dance to decolonize the plaza

The Txistularis have left behind the historic march and have headed towards Plaza Nueva, as the first step of the revolution will be to put the name chosen by the citizens to the streets, and so it was named by the Donostiarras, despite the fact that recently the nickname of the Plaza de la Constitución has taken away all the prominence. Back to the Plaza de la Trinidad, the time has come for us to eat without realizing it. The Sidrería Saizar is prepared with barrels and chairs and tables, and the plaza has been filled with diners. Many have taken home food and shared it among those around them. Many others have received snacks prepared by activists opposed to the G7 summit to help pay the debt accumulated in fines and trials.

Commitment and celebration

On the table, the older ones have enjoyed the Poor Siak show, with coffee and spirits in their hand. The brothers of Uribesalgo have touched social and political issues with an agitated and unprovoked mood. One of them was dressed in cappuccino and with hair cut like monks. Action has left no one indifferent.

The youngest have exercised in the craft txoko and then enjoyed in Zuloaga Square with the performance of Txirri, Mirri and Txiribiton. Three hundred children and parents have mounted a large corro around the clowns.

In the afternoon the Foreign National Documents Release Championship has begun, which has already become a classic. The brand to be overcome is not the one, as Oier made a historic 40-meter launch on ARGIA Day 2016 in Ondarroa. Jokin de Aramaio has taken the challenge seriously and made it very clear to everyone in Donostia: It has passed over the fronton wall and launched up to 43.35 metres a document that does not tell it much personality. Together we have taken a picture in which we denounce the invasion by Rojavan Turkey in Kurdistan and express our solidarity with the Kurdish people, for without an internationalist attitude we will hardly decolonise ourselves of anything. Then the Alkorta brothers have travelled the streets of the Casco Viejo with a kalejira de trikitis and panderetas, and so they have taken ARGIA Street, the tourist city. In dance and in the song, a group atmosphere has been created between the people that have been known today.

It has begun to darken, and along with the concerts a large number of young people have come together, willing to enjoy music. Her daughters, Mursego, Balerdi-Balerdi and Niña Coyote eta Chico Tornado have shaken the barriers of the plaza with the strength and desire that was expected.

To round the day and for ARGIA messages to also be heard in the moonlight, several workers have climbed the stage for weeks and days. In the face of the manipulation of news and the blatant lies, we recall that the cry of ARGIA is the sovereignty of information, and that we will continue to maintain that sovereignty for a hundred years, as far as possible, by making independent and committed journalism.
