We have something to learn
This year, I went to Cauca for the fifth year, along with other colleagues, to help Nasa's indigenous revitalize the language. Back to Euskal Herria, we are often asked if we also learn from them. It is not easy for me to explain what we have to learn, but I would like to give three examples.
The goal of the nests is to strengthen the earth, cosmovision and language. These three elements are based on the survival of the people, and they are clear that the three are united.
The lands were uprooted by the settlers and are currently exploited by large latifundists. Sugar cane is the most powerful monoculture and four are in the hands of the beaters. They occupy an immense territory. In recent years, illegal plantations have also set in motion traditional plantations of the platforms. The use of land is conditioned by narcos and certain armed groups that are funded with cocaine and marijuana. Indigenous people have made a decision to abandon these plantations, but combatants are forced to prevent them. Cosmovision especially affects the spiritual dimension of life. We're often asked how we've worked on this in our environment. We, a little ashamed, have to answer that in the Basque Country this area has been occupied by Christianity. But many times we don't realize what's affecting us. This year, we asked boys and girls to paint their families in a school. One child drew trees, images and streams. I asked her to paint the family with amazement, with sweetness, very well. He answered, “This is my family, but you still don’t understand it.”
The aspect of language is our strength. We take advantage of what has been done on the road to the normalization of the Basque Country to offer them and take whatever they want. Today, schools are being set up for both children and adults, taking into account their needs, and an in-depth analysis is being made of what they really need, what situation they have and where they have their shortcomings. Adults want to acquire the language to work on the street and help the language to open new spaces. To do this, it is essential to get the right methodology right and that is where we are. But even though our contribution is of great help to them, even if they thank us very much, our resentments are also evident, and the other time my friend Nasa said clearly to me: “We don’t want students to pass the tests, we want them to live like Nasa.”
