Political salaries
- We are not accustomed to seeing wage cuts among politicians, quite the opposite, when there are changes in the institutions as a result of the municipal, foreign, European and regional elections. It is therefore right and necessary to underline a decision taken by the City of Durango, when the new group has entered.
Although so far it has been led by the PNV, since the last elections the municipal government has been handed over to EH Bildu and the People's Law.
The new mayor of Tabira Vieja, Ima Garrastatxu, has cut almost 40% of the salary received by the former, the jeltzale Aitziber Irigoras. In this way, the cost that the mayor will charge each year, 2,437 euros per month, is increased from 73,822 euros to 47,000 euros. The same salary as the one paid by Garrastatxu in his previous work as an official of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia. Similarly, full-time councillors will charge EUR 2,000 instead of EUR 3,000 per month. Durango City Hall will save EUR 425,000 for social works.
The decision to reduce the salaries of municipal political representatives is exemplary, as is the criterion adopted by the mayor to determine the amount, which will be the same as that which was being received, since he considers that the wage is dignified. The other political forces should take this into account in the institutions that govern. How many millions of euros would we save in Euskal Herria, in the Spanish and French states or in the European Union to improve social services? Politicians here and there receive scandalous monthly salaries that exceed EUR 5,000 or EUR 6,000. Such a measure would also improve the relationship with citizenship.
