Chomsky and Hasankeyf
Noam Chomsky. The BBVA Foundation has awarded the world’s most famous linguist with the Prize for the Humanities, with 400,000 euros. The award was given in April, but Chomsky did not go to Madrid and the organizers wanted to transfer the event to the Biscayan capital. It hasn't even come. Chomsky is known for two reasons. We, as high school students, learned the theories of their language in Spanish texts, along with Fernando Lázaro Carrete. I remember well, Benita, who once asked our mother, in the 1980s, if she knew Chomsky. And I was surprised that I answered yes. Yes, the vast majority of Americans, on the other hand, no. For a long time we were engaged in the campaign against NATO and Chomsky was one of the few American intellectuals in our favour. Besides being a concertionist, he was an anti-imperialist activist (in the campaigns of Vietnam, Timor, Palestine, Nicaragua or NATO…) and visited the prison inside. In the university and in monetary institutions he has not been thankful for his honesty.
BBVA. I recently heard in a radio show the ecofeminist friend Yayo Herrero that BBVA is the dominant symbol of civilization and the current capitalist system. In other words, the model of “bureaucratic-white-man-autonomous” prevails here. I liked it. BBVA, the major multinational oppressive corporation that has spread throughout the Basque Country to the world, along with Iberdrola. This requires special attention from the Basque social partners. The control of the acts of the “ours” transnational corporations, with the consent of the baserritarra Paul Nicholson, and we take care of their anti-social and/or anti-ecological projects and activities. Hasankeif. The old city that can be considered “Gernika” of the Kurds has long been in danger of water. BBVA funds the Ilisu dam that is being built in the Tigris Basin and the international environmental movement, together with activists from Mesopotamia, strongly criticises this investment. Soon they want to start filling the water. It has been our responsibility to make this known to Chomsky. Greenwash and Corporate Social Responsibility are perfectly managed, but I don't have full capacity. They finance summer courses from the Spanish CSIC or the UPV/EHU, but they do not manage to conceal the social and ecological ravages that occur throughout the planet. They have incredible power -- but not everything!
