Victor Hugo and Joker
- The writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885) wrote in 1869 the almost surreal baroque story that most differs from his work: L’Homme qui rit (The man who laughs).
Gwynplaine is kidnapped at the king's command and a surgeon deforms her face so she sounds forever. In 1940, Batman founder Bob Kane and Bill Finger created the best known nemesis of the superhero: Joker.
And they didn't hide that Victor Hugo's performance was inspired; the first comic in which Joker appeared is called The Man Who Laughs, the same name as Victor Hugo's novel.
