In the early years of engineering studies, I only had theoretical topics, and in recent years we have come across the practical world. When they explained to us the functioning of the machines and structures of both steel and concrete, I remember that a professor told us about the safety coefficient. When calculating the concrete of the pillars of a structure and the diameter of the steel threads it contains, he explained to mathematics that, for the sake of safety, it had to multiply by two or three. Indeed, that was the way it was done.

I've always had this concept in my head, and seeing the beams of a New York skyscraper or a bridge over here, I've come up with the same thought: that they would build the thickest beams than necessary, in the name of security. In addition, I have always thought that if you want to achieve savings in buildings, you will have to do so by reducing the safety coefficient, and of course, the cheaper the structure, the greater the risk of damaging it. In the world, behind many failed structures, it is known that not enough mediocre materials or safety coefficients have been applied when constructing.
I am left in my head with another concept of the tunnel, of which the professor spoke to me. When we built a tunnel, it told us what we can find out, material that's too hard, too soft, water, etc. And it's true, how many road jobs have been affected in the tunnels?

In recent years I have been touring for quite a few miles around Euskal Herria, and I often meet the works of the TAV. In the eyes of the engineer, since the TAV is only a succession of structures between bridges and tunnels, I often wonder with what coefficient they will calculate that column. Or what a surprise it is hiding inside that tunnel.

The cost of the APR tranche being built in the Basque Country is estimated at EUR 10 billion, and, as I read in April, the authorities would like to launch the service in 2024, charging eight euros for the journey between the capitals, which really surprised me. I was concerned about the construction works, that is, the structures of concrete and steel of the pillars and the surprises of the tunnel, but to ensure that in 2024 the service is launched (when we are waiting for several important works to be decided in Madrid) and that every year EUR 24,000,000 is raised (therefore, when the investment, at least in economic terms, is going to be a tremendous citizen disaster), I feel like a Basque person. Having seen this, I'd rather not think about the safety coefficient.
