White dragons and walkers
- May I be forgiven by all those who have not yet seen the Throne Game or who have no intention of seeing it ever, but the Spanish election campaign has been more similar than ever to this series.
Not only because, as Joseba Gabilondo would say, the rivalry between the parties has reflected mass neomediebalism – the elites mobilising their troops to defend their interests – but also because the protagonists of the campaign have been the dragons of the east and the white walkers of the north. In other words, because the ghosts of fiction have been the main issues of debate, the threats of fiction, but which generate real terror in many citizens: the friends of ETA have arrived, those who want to break Spain, those who want to defeat us under a communist dictatorship.
Without having to leave Navarre, the candidate of the Unionist Right, Sergio Sayas, said quite clearly: nationalism – the Basque and the Catalan, without saying so – is the biggest problem in Spain. Neither corruption, nor unemployment, nor lack of freedom, nor debt. Nationalism. And the alleged atrocities that nationalists can do if they win serve to cover the real horrors that are happening.
Many voters voted against a stronger ghost, the ghost of fascism. It remains to be seen what the party that has won the most votes will do now. Does it scroll a little to the left? Or will the ghost of the unity of Spain be stirred up in front of dragons and white walkers and, with the Constitution in hand, claim the need for a moderate partner? At the headquarters of Ferraz Street, PSOE voters shouted “with Rivera no”; the answer of the winner of the night came immediately: “We don’t put red stripes.” It couldn't be clearer.
