Pedrada at the head of the Catholic Church
- Rome, March 1144. Pope Lucio II (Gherardo Caccianemici dal Orso) was elected pope. Encouraged by the appointments and, as usual, in an attempt to increase the power of the Pontifical States, Lucio immediately reminded Roger II of Sicily of his obligations as a subject of the pope II.ak.
In response to his inauguration, the Sicilian ruler began preparing the army and the pope withdrew; he signed a truce in which the king of Sicily acknowledged the conditions imposed.
The Romans took him as a sign of weakness of the new pontiff and, at the head of the rich craftsmen and merchants, asked Lucio II.ari to confine himself to celestial issues and give them land affairs. The nobility of the city remained neutral at the time, waiting to see what was going to happen.
When the Pope refused to speak, the citizens formed the Community of Rome, in an attempt to establish a government such as that of the former Republic of Rome, against the authority of the noble and the pope. They also recovered the old SPQR motto (Senatus Populus Que Romanus). The Senate, composed of 56 members, was elected by four representatives in the 14 districts of the city, and Giordano Pierleoni was elected as the principal leader or “patricio”, since at that time the denomination of “consuls” had become too noble.
At first, the nobles found it right to take power away from the pope, as they also did for a long time. But as the Community strengthened, Lucio II.arekin joined together to protect his interests. The supporters of each other then fought the streets of Rome.
In February 1145, a small army headed by Lucio II headed towards the Capitol taken as a strong place by the Republicans. But they did not manage to dominate the Community and, in addition, according to chronicler Dofredo de Viterbo, the Pope received a blow in his head. Days later, he died on 15 February as a result of a coup, after having spent less than a year in the cargo.La Municipality of Rome was dismantled in 1193, after the
