The purple thread of strikes
In studying economics, I've never seen the concept of strike, even though the link between them is very straightforward. The reason is obvious: economic power defines what the economy is. In the strike of women the invisibility is double, because the analysis is done with the glasses of capital and men. I take this time to recall some of those we have done here.
In 1889, in the Santutxu district of Bilbao, there were a few factories. Among them was a txakoli winery and a cigarette factory. Most of the workers were women, with precarious working conditions: wages of misery and endless working hours. In 1903, a few years later, the female workers of Pamplona were protagonists of another conflict. The company Calzados López worked with very young women, many of them children. In addition to poor working conditions, the company wanted a wage reduction, with 48 of the 60 workers starting a strike in April this year.
