Letter to Olentzero
- This year I know what I have to ask of the Olentzero, but, even if it is in March, I think I am already late. These are my demands: on the part of the parties of change, more boldness in decision-making and less insensitivity in acting. Yes, you guessed it, these are things that I've copied to the Unionist right. I have also stolen a third petition: Dear Olentzero, I'd like a think tank next to us.
In Navarra UPN has one: Civility. Last day, the former UPN parliamentarian Iñaki Iriarte gave a lecture there in the cycle “Navarra en libertad” (Navarra libre). Debates of the European Parliament Euskera and coexistence.
In the interview made to him by the Diario de Navarra, Iriarte explained that it is a chimera to want to bring the Basque country back to its historical setting, and absurd, to want to extend it beyond that historical setting. Therefore, in order to be able to teach Basque somewhere, it is necessary that he has ever spoken in that place, but in no case enough. On the other hand, no project can be built on the Basque Country, either on the past or on the future. It's ugly to investigate how we've gotten here, to think about where we want to go, inadequate.
Iriarte's discourse inexorably brings us to the liberal attitude of the time: that whoever wants to learn it is over. But that's a lie. I grew up monolingual, in Spanish, and I started to be 23 because I wanted to learn Basque; my son grew up monolingual, in Basque, but he had to learn Spanish fite, by chance, as soon as school began. By calling it “reality”, we can sacralize and perpetuate that imbalance. Or a government can try to balance, at least a little bit, that situation. Whenever you make courageous decisions. Whenever parties know how to make alliances. And a think tank could help.
