What would happen?
Alice Munro, the author of the series of stories we're dealing with, has been called Canadian Chejov. He has received numerous awards in his long literary career, including the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature. Jury members said the master of the contemporary story (teacher?) It was ... So far he has published fourteen story books, one every four years or so, and in Basque we have two books: In 2012 they returned happiness too great and in 2018 Enemies, friends, boyfriends, lovers, husbands.
In the Universal Literature section, published last year, we have nine stories and the first names the entire collection. A game and a children's song give title to the first and last stories. In these narratives we will find changes of direction in life and in relationships, moving forward and backward in time, the writer will show us that nothing is as expected, that things change.
It puts in front of us the everyday life and masks that it uses and the back of the mask. The women protagonists tell us what happened in their lives: the relationships between couples, illness and death, family visits, memories of childhood youth in old age, the presence of religion, non-marital sex, the displacements between the people and the city, friendship and love.
In stories, we'll find simplicity in prose, but complexity in characters. The water is slowly warmed in the casserole until it is boiled. Clearly and accurately describe characters and situations and then present facts and show surprise. Visit to the residence: “It was women who kept the conversation alive. The men were intimidated in this situation, the adolescents were insulted. Those who received a visit (...) in the head of the procession came proud of the people, but as lost sight (...) of the stress of the visit”.
To this 87-year-old writer, I give the impression of being a scholar of the tribe when the protagonist looks back at her narratives to convey her experiences to future generations. As the narrator says in the last story, “you never know,” “everything is possible.” In addition, their characters see things from different angles. I invite you to do it with this book.
