Word and voice
The musician Ibon RG (Ibon Rodriguez) has published his first feature film with the label of the Repeater collective, in which he was currently working. They are two ten-inch vinyl discs, one sung to capella and one with piano accompaniment.
Txesus Garate Tzesne has been in charge of recording and producing this new record work. The recording sessions have been held in different places: In an eremitorio of Manzanedo Arana, in the sima Aitzpitarte IV of Rentería, in the bunkers of Getxo and Galdakao and in the music school of Eibar. You can hear how Ibon's voice echoes especially against the walls and edges of these places. In some songs, the voice seems to emerge from below the earth.
Ibon's voice, which goes inside, goes inside the listener, touches his bowels and heart. His voice, his singing, is utterly touching, terrible, terrible. Sometimes it sings slowly, sometimes faster, sometimes smoother, sometimes harder, and even sings howls, muffled, and sounds. It uses different forms and tones of singing and it uses very well the rhyme and phonetic possibilities of syllables and letters, sounds.
He also plays the piano perfectly, according to each song he asks you, nothing else, with no decorations or virtuosity that can be left over. The voice is the protagonist.
The songs are bitter, vibrant, sharp, made around relationships, the true and the false, time, memory, death, etc. and expressed through elements of nature. All the words on the album are from Ibone, except for the poem Subjective Conditions of Koldo Izagirre.
Sestaotarra Ibon Rodriguez has been participating for several years in various projects, making unconventional music, and broadcasting concerts within the Kafe eta Galletak initiative. He is currently part of the group Eten and Miguel A plays in the Gargara pair, which mixes voice improvisation and electronics. García. He has also worked with Xabier Montoia, and has carried out production work for Mursego, Manett and other groups.
