The European elections have historically been regarded as second-rate elections. There is probably more than one reason, but there seems to be a lack of clarity in the role of the European Union (EU) and a lack of interest and information. However, in these times of globalisation, Strasbourg and Brussels are getting closer and closer. Not only that. In the last decade, it has become clear how far the shadow of Europe comes. On the one hand, referring to what is called the economic crisis, the economic governance of the states has been dependent on the conditions imposed by the troika: austerity, deficit limit and debt control. Although it has not been applied in the same way in all States, in general, the measures have hit the welfare state strongly, as the limitation of public spending has directly affected social spending and the conditions of workers have significantly worsened. The EU has also taken a leading role in other issues: managing the migration crisis, increasing euro-scepticism, Brexit, etc. In the case of Catalonia, even in the face of the harsh persecution of 1 October and the proclamation of the republic, there were those who had faith in the response coming from Europe. The next morning, however, had been cold and the expected protection had not come.

Although the coincidence with the municipal and foral elections does not help, it seems that the next Eurobozos can have another role in the Basque Country. Bearing in mind that they will be in the middle of the trial against the Catalan sovereign process, the electoral quotation aims to take advantage of itself as a speaker to denounce the lack of democracy in the Spanish State against Europe. The first time it was presented was a coalition formed by “Now Republics”, EH Bildu, BNG and ERC. Oriol junqueras will be the head of the FIFA Valuation Committee’s list. This decision will help to give a European dimension to the trial.

At the moment, the PNV and the PdCAT have not clarified whether or not they will repeat the 2014 coalition, which may be known before the article is published. Their statements show a favourable atmosphere, although the agreement is not yet closed and the political and programmatic strategies of both parties can make it difficult to move. From prison, Jordi Turull has shown his complete readiness to lead the list of candidates for the presidency. The election, together with Junqueras, of another politically persecuted politician on two different lists, would increase the dissemination mentioned above. However, it does not seem that the PNV is very comfortable in this strategy. It has always kept its distance from the independence process in Catalonia and does not seem to be willing to reach that level of commitment. The seat of Izaskun Bilbao is guaranteed through an agreement with Commitment by Galicia and the Canary Islands Coalition, according to Europa Press. In any case, the fact that EH Bildu goes into such a strong coalition is going to influence, and hopefully the PNV will want to appear publicly with a similar alliance. It's yet to be seen.

The elections will pass, but what is clear is that getting alliances and making stateless nations together will be crucial if something is to be achieved. Not only within the Spanish State, but also outside the borders, where the game is increasingly being played at European and international level. The key is to put on the agenda the right to decide and compel the different actors to position themselves on this issue. To this end, among other things, the representatives we send to Europe are important.
