The hat crazed by mercury
- Alice's adventures, by Lewis Carroll in wonderland, one of the characters in the novel is Crazy Hats, and it's no accident.
Carroll knew the Stockholm hats factory and knew that mental problems were common among the hats. In the textile sector, and specifically in the chapel sector, mercury was used to wash the skin and for a long time, when breathing this substance, workers used to have symptoms such as irritating attitude, mistrust, loss of self-esteem, aggressiveness…
It would later be known that mercury was the origin of these mental problems, but the phenomenon also influenced language; in English, the expression mad as a hatter (as crazy as the hats) continues to be used.
