Migration in the centre
- “2018 has been the year of migrants, and on that road also goes 2019. But not because it comes to ‘snatch’ the work, as some want to sell us, but because increasingly harsh immigration policies and increasingly xenophobic speeches are spreading in Europe. And because it's the year of elections, I think we'll hear them closer and higher.
The interested messages seeking political gain, which are already known to us, have made a hole in our precarious society, are acquiring legitimacy in public opinion, and the mental walls that we are creating are then transformed into physical walls. Not in vain, during these years Europe has raised 1,000 kilometres of walls that are only looking to curb migration, six times more than the old Berlin Wall. There are also few who die in the Mediterranean. And the killing is going to remain the same, unless migration policy is radically changed.
However, far from the walls and
the scarce institutional policies, the citizens’ networks have given a meritorious response to the issue. They have offered solidarity and support to migrants who come to our country beyond charity and have joined in the struggle for a dignified and comprehensive reception. These are, for example, those who have drawn up the manifesto “Euskal Herria, a welcoming people”, recalling that Euskal Herria has always opened its arms to those who have come; they are those who, on 26 January, will make a demonstration in Irun in solidarity with the people who are in transit; and they are those who will mobilise on 5 May in different cities and peoples of Europe in defence of human rights. They will demand “the right to life and free movement of all people in the world”, as no one is illegal, or no one should be illegal for being born in one place and in another.
