As they have published in Catalan, thirteen years later I have read Uxue Apaolaza’s first book since children lie. And after thirteen years, I found her peripheral, strange, radical, conscious, humorous again, as Iban Zaldua said, far from the Buenist literature that is still in force in our country today. I also felt like reading Mea fault, closer in time, because in my day it caused me more uncertainty than the first.
I liked more than then the protagonist, let’s say soft, unusual, so very loving (“I envy the importance that people give to live, the desire they put to call happiness, to take advantage of time”). I liked the antagonist, who also lacks “the least generosity with the neighbor that is needed for the functioning of a civilized society”, difficult to define the affective link that emerges between them. But, above all, I was interested in thinking about the conflict, which focuses on one point. “I lived among people who celebrated the death of Miguel Ángel Blanco and said nothing to them,” says the protagonist at one point, and then says: “I would like to know what percentage of unjust suffering we have accumulated, my guilt.” Finally, a sentence that, because of the effect of mirrors it knows, disrupts the interior: “And it was neither the best nor the worst, but my percentage is the complicit silence, which blames the victim.”
The doubts of seven years ago are there, history advances sometimes, facts jump from one side to the other, style often does not help narration, sometimes it costs to go ahead. Short: more fine-tuned than long. But to this novel I have now seen greater virtues, or that the virtues have overshadowed doubts, to the extent that the reading is worthy of consideration. "Is it the beginning of a generation? ", asked Gorka Bereziartua in criticism of Apaolaza's debut. “We are reactionary after that middle class,” reads in Mea. A generation, my friend, our generation.
