Basque modernity and job insecurity
- The governments of Navarre and the CAV, as well as their foreign or local administrators, are proud of the modernity of cities, museums, geography, gastronomy and all kinds of events of all kinds: they increasingly attract more international tourism. Tourists who live among us for a few days spend and consume money, which has repercussions on the situation of thousands of workers. The Administration is putting public money into these events that are considered tractors for tourism. The situation of the workers is also so modern... that they live in precariousness and exploitation. Who then benefits from public money? That they get private benefits with miserable working conditions.
Last week the cleaning services of the hotels Barceló and NH of Bilbao began an indefinite strike in protest against the reform of the law. Each room has to be cleaned at EUR 2.5, so they have to spend long working days in order to get home with a salary of EUR 800 per month. The workers in the elegant Basque restaurants have complained about the precariousness of their working days and conditions. As in the past, museums were complaining. We do not have general pictures of the situation of the hospitality industry, but these examples can be the tip of the iceberg: the one that has been revealed through the large mass of precariousness and exploitation that exists in many Basque centers.
Administrations that provide millions of euros to attract tourism, although in most cases it goes into private hands, should have more control over what goes down there with the workers, by the time the hotel and restaurant make it work so well... Basque modernity, yes, but also decent employment.
