I don't love him but I do
The Valencian publisher Algar has published eight albums in Basque in recent years, half of which have been produced by Rocío Bonilla. They're curious books, and the clearest proof of structure we have. Brothers! It is a work that can be read on both sides, has no background or anterior face, and the reader finds in this book two covers (instead of the usual cover and back cover). And because it has two covers, you can read two stories, two narrators, but repeating the same structure. The boy starts his story with the phrase “I don’t love my sister”, while the girl does it with the phrase “I don’t love my brother”. And both the one and the other mention the negative aspects of his brother, why he does not want him (because he makes him feel small, because he is oppressor; because he destroys everything, because he is weeping…). But, as it happens many times, we want that close person more than we think. Bonilla makes the story through words and images, facilitates reading with few words and with significant images.
There are a thousand reasons to hate a brother, some of which we can find in this play. A thousand reasons to love brothers.
The book by Rocío Bonilla is really nice, reads with pleasure and is ideal to have a nice time with young children (with the lap… or in small groups at school), as they are stories that can happen to children every day and, in the end, a touch of humor to smile to the reader.
But humor is not just a final issue, especially in the end, because throughout the story each brother represents the other through an animal and this behaves in this way. In the narrative rhythm, in addition, the repeated presence of the protagonists in the images brings a great vitality to the story, which in many occasions increases the tone of humor.
This work translated into Basque by Gerardo Markuleta is a beautiful, curious, entertaining, fun and exciting book. It is worthwhile that the child is in the lap and is in bed to take the book and enjoy it; it is worth telling the group by teaching the images. And why not, maybe you too have a good time with the proposal made by Rocío Bonilla.
