Andoni Egaña published the novel Pausoa noiz luze twenty years ago, after obtaining the Joseba Jaka scholarship. A suggestive title, different in terms of the subject, and also worked on the wording.
Egaña is noted for the master's degree in oral language, as the expressions in the mouths of the characters round the most literary aspect of this novel (narrative structure, narrative changes, storytelling and fiction times, etc. ). Humor and irony with dark facts lead us to imagine a writer with a severe look at reality. Not only an observer, but he looks at the places where no one has looked and like no one.
The Republican uprising of soldiers in Jaca (1930) and the reality of the Zarautz College of Vocational Training, founded in the 1960s, are the two main plans of the novel. Jumping from one side to the other, the linear narrative is totally broken. In addition to these time jumps, the voices of different storytellers report on a broken society. These fragments are picked up, without losing the thread and putting each character in place.
It is not, much less, a Manichean novel, as it is fulfilled by characters in a variety of ways. But there's one that unites all the characters. Fray Kandido, director of the Zarautz school. It is of a complex nature, which wants to live consistently, but which the reality has contradicted. Rumours about the mystery of ignoring Fray Kandido's past are linked to him, although the opinions raised by this ignorance clash with his true past. Despite the secrets, in this novel that makes decision-making reflect, I have the impression that the election of Fray Kandido is not so clear.
They're also gestures to literature. As a symbolic complement to the situations, references to poems and works such as Machado, Lorca or The Pascual Duarte de Cela family are correctly incorporated in the narrative (1942). However, in this polyphonic novel I have been lacking some voices, because it shows us the worlds of men (the military and the priest), being rare those of women; nor have I been able to find other kinds of echoes, especially those of Basque writers or Republicans. What you cannot ask is a novel, but in it the reader has somewhere to enjoy.
