Long light
He was about eighteen years old and lived in Madrid. I suddenly decided that I would be Euskaldun, Euskaldun and Euskaldun, actively and consciously. Many factors influenced this decision, but the pillar of thought put it in volume: Compilation of the results of the Congress of Eusko Ikaskuntza held in Oñati in 1918. There I found a whole city project and decided to be part of it.
In fact, what happened in Oñati 100 years ago is historic: the elites with wisdom of the time analyzed in depth the future of the Basque people and placed in the hands of society the basis of the strategies to be developed, as symbolized by the end of the congress aurresku and the soka-dantza. They worked in many areas, but I particularly remember those referring to the Basque country: ikastolas, university and Euskaltzaindia.
The Eusko Ikaskuntza herself was formed as a consequence of the congress in order to continue her work. A clear exponent of the prestige gained in the first years is the commission to the institution during the Spanish Republic: Draw up the Statute of Autonomy to make it available to the parties. For me, the culmination of Eusko Ikaskuntza was the drafting of the first version of the Estella Statute, the main contribution to the popular project.
A hundred years later, Eusko Ikaskuntza is making an effort to overcome the Francoist persecutions and loopholes left by the Katramiles and put them back at the service of the popular initiative. In this effort we are more than a thousand people, because wisdom is much more widespread, and for me it is a great honor to be part of a motor group that talks about the future of the Basque Country.
I sincerely believe that we need to turn on a long light. At the end of the Franco regime, we immersed ourselves in action and have not had much time to investigate what we have done or to smell what is coming. However, it is necessary to look up and turn on a long light; with the short light, all the roads seem correct, only with the length are the curves of the road perceived.
The conference cycle of Eusko Ikaskuntza to be held in the autumn of this year aims to provide the first starting point for this initiative: to propose the main lines of the evolution of the Basque community in the coming decades and to make them available to society. Knowing that it is up to the social partners and representatives to agree on the decisions and to carry out the initiatives, in the logic of collaborative governance being carried out in the world and in our own.
Four decades – almost five – have left the Madrid decision and remain alive.
