Flawless ending
During the month of August, solo artists, groups and orchestras participated in this year’s edition of the Quincena Musical. A good, juicy edition, where the audience has responded very well. The Orchestra of Hamburg, the Orchestra of Rotterdam and the Orchestra of Budapest have left a good taste, but the Sinfonieorchester Köln has certainly left us astonished.
It can be said that this Cologne Orchestra is one of the main European radio orchestras, in its 65 years of operation, very flexible and versatile, but it must be said that much of the success is due to the director Jukka-Pekka Saraste. In the 2010-2011 season, the Finnish was named head of Saraste and has given the group a very special sound and elegance.
Proof of this was the closing concert of the Fortnight. Requiem by Hector Berlioz op. 5 artworks is a great challenge for any orchestra, as it is such a rich artwork and an amazing orchestration. Sarast proved to have a deep knowledge of the work. It did not exaggerate in any way the feeling and nuance required of each passage. This réquiem is not a religious work for use. Berlioz himself was not a very godly man and therefore escapes from the usual paths. It does not exploit introverted religious sentiment. Instead, it makes a broad and epic account of the final trial.
The Orfeón Donostiarra did a fine and delicate job, only at all times, very pasted with the orchestra. On the other hand, we have to give a magnificent prize to the soloist. Tenor Maximilian Schmitt showed a beautiful and well-dominated voice. Maybe some idiot had been forced into it, but his song had been sweet and shiny.
Therefore, a show session to give a satisfactory end to the festival.
