Joxemari Sestao has brought to Euskera an atypical poet, as Beñat Sarasola tells us in the foreword, who prefers the poetry of the skies higher than the poetry he has to say with the body: “With open fabrics on dead animals/ mist/ hiding the landscape where the body is/ what you forgot yesterday at dawn.”
Difficult and lover of marginal loves, Alberto Rapose Pidwell Tavares (Coimbra, 1948–Lisbon, 1997) was sculptor, cultural animator, art commissioner, editor of Antonio Madeira or Sergio da Costa e Silva, hippy for Europe, learned and unlearned. What Al Berto brought to words lived from the depths, and to write about life -- beautiful things, bad things -- needed necessarily new ways: “Oli, the invisible chapero, tended on the carpet and screamed: No, you don't target me, I'm Swiss and the Swiss don't give us the ass! Bah! The nails slowly, slowly... and put the butt, grind the teeth like a tall bitch thirsty for sperm."
I would say that Al Berto's writing is the poetry of rage. However, it is not artificial. Blood is authentic, the real sweats, the seed, the saliva. Let's say that demassage is the commitment that the world generates to the poet, the mirror of reality. At times, Al Berto seems to have a two-way feeling: he is made absurd of existence, but he only finds meaning in the absurd. It solves through art the seemingly contradictory. And only the meteoric journey of man among the stars can be defined with this naïve writing, without complexes and kindly: “In the celluloid of the night film: wing architecture / wind vaults are the birds of the garbage.”
The Expresso had picked up the words one month before he died. “All the meus livros tivadimum nature of emergency”. All fast, all serious. Whoever approaches this anthology will find no more peaceful pond than the rude and elegant words written by a soul in full boiling with pain and pleasure. You'll like it. You won't like it. At least you will not be disillusioned by a poet that tells the truth.
