The old bus station in Pamplona/Iruña has taken a new look. More than on the outside, the change inside has been greater: among the old windows of the time the Geltoki project has been launched, a project that wants to invest in the solidarity economy, food sovereignty and alternative culture in the capital. On 9 June, the doors of the new space were opened to the public.
At the beginning of the year the City of Pamplona awarded the space of the old station to Geltoki Iruña Elkartea, the promoter of the project. The Network of Alternative and Solidarity Economy of Navarra, REAS, the Council of Organic Agricultural Production of Navarre, NNPEK, the Navarre Union EHNE, Traperos de Emmaus and the Association of Food Artisans of Navarra make up Geltoki Iruña. It is a cooperative of ten workers who will manage the company’s new work centre.
The project has been supported in order to secure the necessary infrastructure through the collection campaign which ended at the end of June. “We want to raise awareness and encourage reflection about each other’s consumption habits: what we are going to buy is what we really need, what its origin is, who and how it does it…”, the drivers explained in the presentation of the campaign.
The 900 square meters of the Station will be distributed in different areas. In the locker area, for example, environmentally friendly and sustainable local products will be displayed and sold. “Here it will be easy to fill the shopping cart and you won’t have to think about anything: food will be local, ecological and seasonal,” said Edorta Lezaun, president of NNPEK. The cafeteria will also offer organic vegetables from Navarra and the time, based on a philosophy of 0 kilometers and with a sustainable and healthy offer.
Reading points for adults and children, library, theme library… There will be a wide offer at Elkargunea Station. For buying, for leisure, but above all, for awareness.
