Sotheby's, Greece and legitimate property
- The Sotheby’s auction house in New York has just filed a complaint with the Greek Government with the aim of “clarifying the legitimate property” of the bronze horse seen in the image.
The Greek Ministry of Culture was already clear about the origin of the work and its priority is to recover the stolen works from Antiquity and to protect the historical and cultural heritage. He therefore requested the removal of the small sculpture that was to be sold at auction on 14 May.
The response of the auction house is not very common, since on those occasions they negotiate with governments the return of items. Sotheby’s wanted to “open a new path”, but the plundering of heritage is an old road.
