Notre-Dame-des-Landes
In the small town in the area of Nantes, known as NDDL, for 50 years it has fought against an airport project, especially in the last decade. Starting in 2009, the defense of the environment and of local farmers was joined by the problem of climate change and, in general, the total criticism of the capitalist mode of production. At first, the different social actors were mobilized and other more radical sectors joined together to make the project more difficult. The dynamic of the struggle created an alternative micro-society and diverting the acronyms ZAD became the famous “Repressed Organization Zone”, becoming a socio-political space.
The attacks of the gendarmes are not just barricades. It leaves out the objectives and strategies agreed by several sectors that mobilized against the airport project for the day after a hypothetical victory
The project was finally abandoned by the State last February. But at the same time, it took the firm decision to “normalize” the situation. There were no reasons. The affirmation of the authority of the State to purify the time of surrender. It also destroyed the symbol that began to portray the system of multinationals represented by the company Vinci, and that began to fully reflect its desire to build an alternative. Finally, the bells of the right and left productive sectors were silenced and, as it is clear in recent weeks, they agreed to leave the area, always preserving the interests of the large farmers who want to recover their land. Therefore, since 9 April, the French State has launched an operation never seen before: 2,500 military mobilized, tanks, helicopters, drones, trucks, mechanical pallets; has used over 10,000 grenades of all kinds: flash ball and tear gas. In other words, it has spent EUR 300,000 a day. Interim meeting: 300 wounded, one of them severely, many destroyed homes, some broken orchards and many other poisoned herds.
But gendarmes' attacks are not just barricades. It has left out the objectives and strategies agreed by the various sectors that mobilised against the airport project for the day following a hypothetical victory. The platform, summarised in six points, defended the right of all citizens to participate in the fight, among other things, and the definition of the use of land released by an organisation that emerged from the anti-airport movement. Today, the movement is forced to rethink perspectives under the pressure of the besieged and besieged state. Give up the blackmail of the State and accept the will to lose everything or the conditions imposed to guarantee collective experiences. Ardent debates, but with a desire for resistance, yet!
