Activist Amelia Bloomer started dressing that way and pushed the trend in The Lily's women's magazine. That's why those pants have been called bloomers ever since. But Bloomer himself rejected this fashion in 1859, after inventing merinake, because he didn't need it.
By then the belocypedo had already been invented, but it was an expensive and difficult device to drive. At the beginning of the Belle Époque, in the 1870s, the size of the wheels of the bicycles was matched, pedals were added and prices dropped. Some women were also encouraged to do so, they had the opportunity to move from one place to another freely and quickly.
Faced with this new threat, doctors immediately warned that bicycle use was very harmful to women, as it caused sterility and nerve problems. And in part it was true that women, with their narrow corsses and their heavy dresses, had no point in cycling. The problem was solved with the use of the bloomers pants, as it was in clothing and not by bicycle.
So, French teachers were forbidden from going to school dressed in bloomers, throwing stones at Emma Eades in London when she was cycling, Lady Haberton wasn't allowed into the cafes when the bike was leaving and approaching to drink something...
These attitudes changed significantly before the end of the century. In 1894 Annie “Londonderry” Kopchovsky was neither a cyclist nor an activist for women’s rights. But he heard two men saying that it was impossible for women to turn around the world by bicycle and he had a challenge. He returned to the starting point 15 months after leaving Boston, becoming one of the most effective drivers of the rights of the mujeres.En July 1891, a column from the Chicago Tribune said: “I used to think that the worst thing a woman could do was burn, but I’ve changed my mind. The worst thing I've ever seen is that a woman walking by bike." After Annie's return to the world, The New York World described the feat: “The most amazing journey a woman has ever made.”
The following year, 1896, María E. Ward published the practical guide Bicycling for Ladies. This guide taught you how to ride a bicycle, how to buy the best option and how to repair breakdowns, so that from then on, female cyclists wouldn't need men. That same year, Susan B. Popular suffragist Anthony expressed his opinion on the bicycle: “In the world it has done more than anything to emancipate women”
