The perfidities of the summit
As Haritz Monreal remembers in the Mountain Literature (UPV/EHU, 2017), numerous literary discourses have been developed around mountain experiences: mountaineering has had a heroic sense as a symbol of overcoming obstacles; or, if it is the echo of an aesthetic experience, the mountaineer has become a source of admiration of the landscape; or, it has been represented as a space of romantic solidarity, etc. In the Mendi-joak narrative collection by Aingeru Epaltza there is an echo of these symbologies and mythologies of the mountain, always to make their edges appear, or to tell the bitterness of the experiences, or to talk about the weaknesses of the gentleness.
In the ten narratives various relationships have been collected with the mountain, but in all of them mountaineering is a playful activity, although we are also told the announcement of leisure, as the mountain workers are also given a voice (mountain guide, bartender of shelters, forest guard or biologist). Interpersonal relationships are the core of the narratives. He has used many narrative voices to tell interpersonal tensions and pains (perspective, ironic distance, child voice, etc.). ), but there are continuous narrative techniques that have as their axis view and dialogue: detailed descriptions of the figure and expression, landscape nuances, prisons of desire, jumps in the facts, changes in the narration…
The mountain is a passion lived by many of its protagonists and that leads them to fight with their family, friends, lovers or themselves. In the middle of the mountain they have inclinations: feelings of envy, rivalries, cowardice, friendships, etc. There are in many facts or voices echoes of virility, evident and inflexible, that cause wounds in female and male characters. The romantic view of the mountain is not in the collection, but in a bitter, competitive and vulnerable society.
