The Cherry Boppers group recently released its new album, For Dancers Only, under the premise of implementing what they announced on 4 May at the Kafe Antzokia in Bilbao. After a long time without playing live, the group returned to the stage. It was a night of American taste, previously played by The Reverendos, a rock&roll group in the South of the United States. But the style of The Cherry Boppers is based more on funk and groove.
Black music is not the most common among the Basque groups, the originality of the group must be acknowledged. The Cherry Boppers is a reconstruction of the golden age of James Brown and the company, in tone of voice and attitude. They have also removed For Dancers Only in vinyl, if someone wants a full pack of nostalgia. But, as they demonstrated in Bilbao, they are able to chain a contemporary audience.
Their secret is to live music with passion. When the octet came onstage, the audience forgot that it was in Bilbao and appeared in a '70s disco with a magic mix of trumpets, saxophones and keyboards. They didn't wear Afro-shaped hair, but some of the members of the group wore colorful shirts and pants in wide sub-areas.
The Cherry Boppers is an instrumental group, although occasionally some sticky choruses are interspersed in English, but when they played a soft song, they clearly said, in Basque, by the microphone: “This is the last opportunity to embrace the next one.” From that moment on, viewers had no choice but to move their waistband. However, despite the topical rigidity of the Basques, it was hard for them to convince the people; in the end, no one stood still.
The way in which they filled the stage of the Kafe Antzokia, not only with sticky melodies, but also with musicians, also drew attention. At all times there were eight teammates playing together, to which the collaborators joined. One of them was Dudu Duchen, who came to break the band's instrumental personality. With a suggestive and vigorous voice, he brought the concert, soul and jazz together for a moment.
Despite his nearly fifteen years of career, at the Kafe Antzokia concert we were able to show that The Cherry Boppers is still fit, if anyone had any doubts. Without losing freshness, they have maintained their essence, and that is not easy if you work a style that has little reputation in the Basque Country. We can say calmly that they are able to revive the black soul of the listeners and turn them into any ballroom.
