The Garlic, the Zapatero, the Egg of the Bird, the King and the Salt, the Dog of the Miller and the Singing Bird. Those are the five stories that Juan Kruz Igerabide has collected and molded for this new collection.
“Stories live in the world, moving from one country to another, transforming from one language to another, synthesizing, spreading, mixing with other stories.” This is the first sentence of the book, which tells us the rich and varied origin of popular stories. And later, as he recognizes in this foreword, these stories “are written as we tell them in our house,” knowing that there may be many variations of them. Between the versions of the story The King and the Salt, for example, Joxe Arratibel got us the famous Marixor. In the latter, as indicated in the preamble, “his suit was linen at first, then silver, and finally gold, representing in more detail the psychological change of becoming a woman”.
I will not comment here on these five popular stories, they are recommended and serve to better understand our culture, besides being ours, they are also those of others. I think it is more important, at least here, how the story of these stories is presented to us in this book. On the one hand, we count on the contribution of the writer, updating and facilitating the story, elaborating the final formulas, working well the phrases that appear at the end of the story. In fact, the selections and stories made by Igerabide are noteworthy.
On the other hand, it is worth noting the work done by Elena Odriozola in the illustrations. Classic four-leaf images, images renovated with the air of the illustrator Aurelio Arteta Errasti, in all of them winemakers, as you can see a touch of your own as if you were in a game. It's literature that, play, enjoyment, time to have a good time.
In this book they are easy to read, legible aloud, stories that lead the reader to a pleasant moment through stories and illustrations that allow us to delve into our tradition. And as Juan Kruz Igerabide says in his preamble, “let them fly through your imagination and fertilize in your land.”
