The study that the Elkar Foundation has carried out on the cultural consumption of the Basques has made a dent in the world. The curious thing is that it is an old issue for anyone who knows the situation of Basque culture from within. The news, in any case, has been the impact that cold data have had on this occasion. In collaboration with the Ni Elkar Foundation, “more effective policies” are needed to socialise Basque production. It's about guessing what those policies are. Reading animation campaigns are fine, but they're not enough to reveal a dark picture. The scarce consumption of Basque cultural production is a structural problem that should be assumed by those who design and promote linguistic policies in institutions and beyond. It directly affects the use of the language and its quality, that is, its duration.
In the middle of the Central Sea, our production is like raindrops. Their visibility should be one of the main concerns of these policies. The institutionalization of our territories has created two tools, without belittling the others, for the sake of language: Educational System and Television Basque Country. We had to ask each other more.
In the field of teaching, it is urgent to direct from top to bottom the curriculum of the Basque Language and Literature from the first courses to the baccalaureate. To leave aside the mimetic complexes and radically change the contents so that the subject in question is a nice showcase of Basque production. Less verbal syntagmas and more pleasure in sewing and reading. Movies, road productions, songs, music. A language party, not a word cemetery.
ETB also has to be reinvented so that the common Basque has again the reference of the cult standard. It is not a question of all the speakers becoming Amonarriz or Euzkitze, but of giving that standard its natural place, in a field that is shamefully abandoned by this means: the dubbing of series and films.
Compared to them, it seems to be too pressing an issue for the image of the Basque, but it will once again have to be addressed. As a century ago, and although we appeared in different forms, we still have the rarity of writing as a genuine example of being Basque. You have to be amazed at how many environments in which the most Euskaldun is never the most read or the most cultured, but the most donkey and the most screaming. At least a century ago, those people were able to put together three sentences. Now, not even that. It has touched us to live neobasritarianism. He died.
