Electric jump
Mikel Uraken’s previous album – After the winter, 2015 – is very good. He recorded it alone, with his voice and his guitar. But, rather than doing the new job in the same way, he's decided to do it in auzolan with two other people and in another way. So, with the drums David Tobal and the bassist Gorka Pardo, which have passed through the Sisha Pagma and Hautsa groups respectively, he has faced the challenge and has succeeded, as the result of the work is beautiful, exciting.
In his previous work, Mikel worked on some new forms from the roots of the Basque folk. With the help of David and Gorka, this new album has made a leap forward, an electric leap, creating environments, now quiet and soft, now alive and violent, very well dressed in custom-made drawings and details.
In general, they are songs or long pieces that explain our inner emptiness, weakness, powerlessness, pain, fear and loneliness: “I have dreamed that I am a man, a dream, a man in his emptiness” (I am a man), “A thousand lost words, a thousand experiences, take the old verses; projects of life, dreams, useless moments without maturing” (A moment), “We know that singing from our place is not going to miss us a moment, but it is going to sing again in the place of others”.
According to the title of New Living Beings, Mikel Urak is a new being that has three heads. The songs have been composed by Mikel himself – the lyrics have been written by Gorka Erostarbe, Aiert Goenaga and Gotzon Barandiaran – but the adaptations have been made among the three musicians. The work of Ander Barriuso as head of sound and production is also noteworthy.
In the coming days, Mikel, David and Gorka will be in charge of presenting the new living beings of the film. Among others, on 19 April in the Kafe Antzokia of Bilbao, on 5 May in Bonberenea de Tolosa and on 2 June in Orbeko Etxea de Llodio.
